About thE projectS

The Teaching in American History Projects are collaborative efforts between CATE (Center for Advanced Technology in Education) at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon and the Douglas County ESD in Roseburg, Oregon and the High Desert ESD in Redmond, Oregon.

The population to be served by the Douglas County Themes in American History project includes teachers and students in the 13 school districts of Douglas County, Oregon. These districts have approximately 850 teachers who instruct nearly 20,000 students. Douglas County has a largely rural population, served by small schools spread over a wide area, and distant from the major population and educational resources of the state.

The population served by the High Desert American History Project includes teachers from nine school districts in three counties of central Oregon, who serve a combined total of more than 25,000 students. Central Oregon is largely rural, characterized by mostly small schools spread over a sparsely populated geographic area and separated from the major population and educational resources of the state by the Cascade Mountains.

Each of the projects has three goals:

(a) improve the teaching of American history in all 13 districts served by Douglas County ESD, and nine districts served by High Desert ESD

(b) provide research-based professional development opportunities in the teaching of American history to 80 teachers in Douglas County schools, and

(c) improve the extent to which and the ways in which students of Douglas County learn about American history, including the themes, people, and events of our national heritage.
